She advises clients in structuring, negotiating, and enforcing land agreements that protect property rights, allocate development risk appropriately, and preserve long-term asset value across evolving and multi-use land portfolios.

Her practice spans the full spectrum of surface and subsurface land use—from agricultural and ranching operations to independent and major oil and gas development, to commercial surface uses and renewable energy projects. She advises on projects involving concurrent and overlapping land uses, structuring agreements from initial site selection through long-term operations to ensure development proceeds without compromising landowner protections.

Before joining Brady & Hamilton, Sonya served on the Executive Leadership Team as Vice President of Legal for University Lands, overseeing legal strategy for 2.1 million acres of Permanent University Fund lands in the Permian Basin. She advised on matters impacting more than 250 operators and billions in annual revenue, negotiated complex energy and infrastructure agreements, and led the modernization of more than 300 form contracts governing oil and gas, water, sand, renewable energy, and surface development activities. Her work required balancing high-level strategic objectives with disciplined protection of surface and mineral estates.
